A composition inspired by 'The Baltic Road' in 1989. This 'Singing Revolution' ensured that the Batic states were freed from the Russian regime in a non-violent manner.

Nikolay Karpovich Chemberdzhi (1903 – 1948) was a honoured composer in the former autonomous Sovjet Socialist Republic Bashkir, now known as Bashkortostan. This republic in the far south-east of European Russia, is wedged between the Ural Mountains and Kazakhstan. His father was a military doctor. His Greek mother died when he was 2 years old. His father then sent him to Crimea. He was educated in the family of an uncle. In 1917 he left for Moscow where he studied composition at the conservatory. He wrote popular songs, marches and symphonic music. During the second world war he returned to Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan. There he wrote the first 'Bashkir opera' Karlugas (the swallow).

Erbarme dich is a very much appreciated aria from from St. Matthew Passion, a sacred oratorio (passion) composed in 1727 by Johann Sebastian Bach. This oratorio (lyrics by Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander)) is considered to be an absolute masterpiece in the world of religious music.

Johann Strauss Jr. (1825 – 1899) was born in Vienna, and the oldest of six children in a very musical family. Johann Jr. wrote in all of the popular styles of his day, but he was most famous for his dance music—waltzes, polkas and quadrilles. Johann Strauss Jr. wrote his famous Tritsch Tratsch Polka during a trip to Russia in 1858. A very playable arrangement!

Johann Strauss Jr. (1825 – 1899) was born in Vienna, and the oldest of six children in a very musical family. When he was 19, Johann Jr. began conducting. For a time, he and his father had competing orchestras. After Johann Sr. died in 1849, the two orchestras were combined under the son’s leadership. Johann Jr. wrote in all of the popular styles of his day, but he was most famous for his dance music: waltzes, polkas and quadrilles. Als Flotter Geist is one of the very popular songs from the operetta Der Zigeunerbaron.

The Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev lived from 1891-1953 and was a student of Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. During the revolution Prokofiev left to the West. There he became quite famous with his piano performances. In 1933 Prokofiev returned back to his homeland. He received a commission for the ballet music of Romeo and Juliet, the famous story of William Shakespeare. The ballet was initially rejected by the Government. In 1938 however, it was performed at the Bolshoi Theatre. A very popular part is this ' Dance of the Knights '.

Edward William Elgar (1857 - 1934) was a British composer whose work is counted as late Romanticism. His most famous works are the Enigma Variations (1899) and the Pomp and Circumstance Marches Nos. 1-5. The first march containing Land of Hope and Glory is very popular. Hans Derks (a.o.. arranger of the Orchestra of the Royal Air Force of the Netrherlands) arranged this Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 with a contemporary twist.

Robert Stolz (b. Graz, 25 August 1880 – West Berlin, June 27, 1975) was an Austrian composer and conductor. He wrote more than 60 operettas and film music. He is still known as 'the King of Viennese operetta'. Today still popular are: Adieu, mein kleiner Gardeoffizier, Du sollst der Kaiser meiner Seele sein, Im Prater blüh'n wieder die Bäume and Zwei Herzen im Dreivierteltakt. Optional with guitar, piano and bass guitar.

In 1848 the Austrian army under the leadership of Field Marshal Radetzky, defeated the Italian army. This victory was a severe setback for the Italian nationalist movement and ensured that Lombardy belonged to Austria until 1859. After Radetzky had won this 'Battle of Custoza' , his troops marched back to Vienna while singing the ' Tinerl - song'. Strauss used this song in his famous Radetzkymarsch and thereby honored Radetzky and its victory over the Italians.

Bedřich Smetana played piano and violin at a young age, among other things in the family String Quartet. Despite the initial objections of his father, he studied music at the Prague Conservatory. He got a job as a music teacher at a wealthy family and financial support of Franz Liszt, who also introduced him to the music publishing house Kistner. After spending several years in Sweden, he returned to Prague, and was conductor of the National Theatre, to perform especially Czech operas. In 1874 he became deaf as a result of syphilis. Má Vlast was largely written after his be deaf. His first String Quartet, from my life, is an autobiographical work that represents the tinnitus to which he suffered during his deafness. As a result of the syphilis in 1883 Smetana was mentally ill. He was admitted to a psychiatric clinic in Prague, where he died on 12 May 1884, at the age of 60. Czech dance rhythms and folk songs were an important source of inspiration for him. The Louisina Polka is originally composed for String Orchestra.

Carl Carl lived in Bavaria from 1830 – 1898 . In 1848 he became a military musician in Munich and later ´Kapellmeister´. He dedicated the Mussinan Marsch to Regimental Commander Ludwig Ritter von Mussinan. The March is special because of the Trio, which after a slow start accelerates to a fast pace.

An die Musik is one of the many songs that Schubert composed. The song dates back to 1817 and is an ode to the music. It is one of the most beloved songs of Schubert.

Josef Strauß (August 20, 1827 – July 22, 1870) was an Austrian composer. He was born in Vienna, the son of Johann Strauß I and Maria Anna Streim, and brother of Johann Strauß II and Eduard Strauss. His father wanted him to choose a career in the Austrian Habsburg military. He studied music with Franz Dolleschal and learned to play the violin with Franz Anton Ries. He received training as an engineer, and worked for the city of Vienna as an engineer and designer. He designed a horse-drawn revolving brush street-sweeping vehicle and published two textbooks on mathematical subjects. He joined the family orchestra, along with his brothers, Johann Strauß II and Eduard Strauß in the 1850s. His first published work was called "Die Ersten und Letzten" (The First and the Last). When Johann became seriously ill in 1853 Josef led the orchestra for a while. The waltz-loving Viennese were appreciative of his early compositions so he decided to continue in the family tradition of composing dance music. He was known as 'Pepi' by his family and close friends, and Johann once said of him: "Pepi is the more gifted of us two; I am merely the more popular..." A soubrette as a term of the theater, is a lady's maid, in comedies, who acts the part of an intrigante; a meddlesome, mischievous female servant or young woman.

The opera Die Zauberflöte (the magic flute) (KV 620) is one of the best known and most performed operas. The libretto is based on numerous sources, including the fairy tale "Lulu oder die Zauberflöte" of August Jacob liebeskind. The premiere took place on 30 september 1791 in Vienna, at the Theater Auf der Wieden. It is one of the few popular fairy-tale operas that have achieved the status of masterpiece.

Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni (1671 – 1751) was a Venetian Baroque composer. His parents were well-to-do and unlike many of his contemporaries could devote himself entirely to music. Remarkably enough, his name largely survived because of the Adagio in g minor for organ and strings, while later it was established that this work that was published in 1958 by Remo Giazotto, was written by Giazotto himself. The Adagio can performed as well with organ as without organ. The parts include 'little notes' thatmust be played when it is performed without organ. When played with with organ the ' little notes ' can at will be left out or be played. In the organ part also 'little notes' are provided: the pizzicato notes of the double bass. In the absence of a double bass the organ can provide these notes.

Samson and Dalila (opus 47) is the only opera by Saint-Saëns that is still regularly performed. The aria Mon coeur s’ouvre a ta voix, also known as Dalila's Aria, is beautiful, also in this orchestral version.

A fascinating diptych: Willy combined the Cantabile from the 3rd Violin Concerto along with Danse, a song on which Saint-Saens later based his Danse Macabre. The contours of this Danse Macabre are clearly recognisable.

Oberto is an opera in two acts by Giuseppe Verdi. It was his first opera and premiered in the Scala in Milan on november 17, 1839. Riccardo seduces Cuniza, who is engaged with Leonora, the daughter of count Oberto. As the count discoveres this he disown Leonora. Cuniza believes that the problems should not be addressed in this way and revokes her love for Riccardo, so that he can save Leonora's honour by marrying her. Oberto however challenges Riccardo to a duel, but he loses the game and dies. Leonora, desperate and inconsolable by everything that happened, commits suicide.

George Friedrich Händel composed a large number of works in all genres: opera, oratorio, Cantata, Chamber music and large orchestral works, in that time called concerto grosso. His opus 6 consisted of 12 concerti grossi. The Minuet Varié is a part the 5th concert. This festive, varied minuet has become very popular.

Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) was a German organist and composer from the Baroque period. He composed a considerable number of instrumental ensemble works, cantatas and organ works of worship in the Lutheran Church. His most famous work is this Canon, which has been edited for various instruments .

Antonin Dvorak composed the Polonaise in 1879, but it was only published in 1961. Originally for piano quatre mains, the composer expanded it subsequently for orchestra. Willy Hautvast arranged the original, smaller version for concert band.

The piano music of Erik Satie is often adapted for other instrumental ensembles. A familiar example is the orchestration for symphony orchestra Gymnopedie No. 1 by Claude Debussy, edited by Willy Hautvast for our publishing firm for wind band. Willy also made this adaptation of the delicate Petite Ouverture à dancer.

Leo Delibes (1836-1891) was known in his time as a composer of operas and ballets. His most famous compositions are the ballets Sylvia, Coppélia and the comic opera Lakmé. Pavane et Passepied comes from his music for Victor Hugo's play Le Roi s'amuse.

Charles Emile Waldteufel (1837-1915) was musical director at the courts of Paris. His most famous waltz is without a doubt The Skaters Waltz, also known as Les Patineurs.

The song Abschied vom Walde comes from opus 59 Sechs Lieder im Freien zu singen, originally for mixed choir. This arrangement works very well. also for smaller Concert Bands.

In 1880 Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) composed a cycle of songs for soprano and piano. He transcribed two songs, Herzwunden and Letzter Frühling, for string orchestra: Zwei Elegische Melodien opus 34. The melancholic atmosphere of the songs is reflected in this wonderful music.

Stephen Adams (Michael Maybrick) lived from 1844 to 1913. He composed mainly ballads. The Holy City, composed in 1892, is one of the most popular British religious songs.

This title includes two compositions, originally for piano, by the Swedish composer Torsten Petre, a contemporary of Sibelius. The arrangement for concert band is by Dirk van der Niet. Both works go well together, but can also be played separately. 'Tankar Och Minnen' (thoughts and memories) is ideally suited for solemn occasions. 'Vemod och Glädje' (melancholy and a smile) is a sparkling and light-footed sequel.

Deze koraalmelodie stamt uit 1599 en wordt toegeschreven aan Philipp Nicolai. Bach gebruikte ze  eerst in zijn cantate 140 en bewerkte ze later als koraalvoorspel voor orgel, BWV 645.  In dit arrangement omspeelt het hout de door trompetten en trombones gespeelde koraalmelodie, waardoor de oorspronkelijke kleur van het orgel optimaal behouden blijft.
